Off Women’s History Month By Courtney Beatty Looking for something new
and exciting to do this weekend? Then check out Luna Fair on Saturday,
March 6 at Unity Center, located at 1600 West Broadway. The multimedia
event, which includes local performers, a vendor area, children’s
activities and food, will kick off at 2 pm and go until 6 pm. The proceeds
from the bazaar, which is put on by Half the Sky Productions, will benefit
community radio station, KOPN. The local performances include artists such as the Graces, Hormonal Imbalance and Divine Rhythm. The stage will showcase everything from spoken word and drama to percussion groups and folk music. One artist in particular is known throughout the Midwest: Val Goodrich. Goodrich has been playing the guitar since she was eight years old. Her musical style has been described as a combination of folk, rock and blues. She has played both solo and as a part of the Val Goodrich Band. She recently finished work on her latest album, “Stray from the Middle”, which has not been given a release date. MU Women’s History Month (WHM) is also co-sponsoring the event. They were anxious to be a part of two of the displays that will be seen at Saturday’s affair. The first is the Women’s History Display, which highlights 16 different local women’s historical organizations. This will be only the second time the display will be viewed in its three-year history. The second display of interest to MU WHM is the clothesline project. The display contains t-shirts hung on a clothesline each of which was designed by a domestic abuse survivor. One of its members, Virginia Muller, describes Half the Sky Productions as “an egalitarian women’s collective.” Their mission is to give recognition to female artists and their contributions to the community. Although this is their first fair, the organization definitely plans to make Luna Fair an annual event. They also plan to host several other events throughout Columbia which have yet to be planned.
